Does the Future Hold a 2022 Dodge Journey near El Paso, TX?

In mid-2020, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) announced the discontinuation of the Dodge Journey after the 2020 model year, with no immediate plans for a replacement. However, plans for an updated Journey were circulated for nearly a decade before FCA suggested that a brand-new Journey would be introduced in 2016. Additionally, a pumped-up SRT version of the crossover was rumored to be on the way in 2017. Unfortunately, both model years passed us by, and the Journey's trims lessened instead.

It was also reported that a revamped Journey would ride on the same platform as the Alfa Romeo Giorgio sedan, debut in 2019, and its production would move from Mexico to Italy. So far, there's been no confirmation of these situations, so where does this leave the 2022 Dodge Journey near El Paso, TX?

Next Generation Rumors

The next generation of the midsize Dodge SUV could arrive in late 2022 as a 2023 model, according to Mopar Insiders. The rumor remains of it being built upon the Giorgio platform and that it will also include a performance-oriented variant.
While it's currently unclear if the possibly upcoming model will retain the Journey nameplate, sources say the crossover will become a two-row vehicle that seats five. Although it will lose a row, thus becoming shorter in length, it will still offer an abundance of room for passengers. In addition, rumors abound that the future Journey will borrow design elements from the Dodge Charger, including a Scat Pack trim.

Engine Options in the 2022 Dodge Journey near El Paso, TX

Right now, there's a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that delivers 276 horsepower and 306 lb-ft of torque under the hood of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, which is the same engine purported to become the entry-level motor for the Journey. And based on another claim by Mopar Insiders, at least one version of the HEMI V8 will be available for drivers seeking more power. Different rumors have alleged that a turbo V6 will be the base engine while again including a HEMI as an option.
No matter what size, all engine choices are expected to be combined with FCA's newest 8-speed automatic transmission. And no matter which engines are chosen, any one of the configurations will out-perform the existing powertrain, a docile 2.4-liter 4-cylinder pushing 172 ponies and 165 lb-ft of torque.

Improvements

Suppose the 2022 Dodge Journey near El Paso, TX does end up based on the rear-wheel-drive Alfa Romeo Giorgio, which incidentally underpins the AR Stelvio. In that case, it should showcase a sportier shape and look, along with significant improvements in handling and driving manners. All-wheel-drive will also likely be an option if a performance-based Journey is to be offered.

A few renderings have appeared on the internet, showing an idea of how the redesigned Journey could look. Beginning with the same basic shape of the Stelvio crossover, the new look adds Charger-inspired headlights, Durango-like taillights, Hellcat wheels, and a matte black roof. The outcome is a muscular midsize crossover that slots below the Durango and fits in better with the remainder of Dodge's potent lineup.
