The design and styling are indeed what we’d expect from Jeep. It has four doors, body cladding, and chiseled fender lines that give it a chunky look. If you haven’t seen a new Ford F-150 Lightning, GMC Hummer, or electric Chevy Silverado in person, you’ve most likely seen an advertisement, photo, or video of one or all of them. What you haven’t seen is RAM’s version of the electric truck. Sure, there have been lots of teaser images all over the internet and social media, and even an extravagant EV day put on by Stellantis, which disclosed a few details about the truck. But we have yet to see an actual physical depiction of the model “in the flesh,” so to speak. However, according to a new report, we should finally get a look at the RAM 1500 BEV near El Paso, TX before too long. It may only be a concept version, but it should give us some idea of what to expect from the long-awaited zero-emission pickup truck. 

RAM 1500 BEV near El Paso, TX to Make Concept Appearance in Late 2022

The report came after an interview that RAM brand CEO Mike Koval had with Automotive News. In the interview, Koval revealed that a year-long tour of “RAM Real Talk” events is currently underway in hopes of discovering what potential customers want in the future pickup truck. This input from the public is helping to design the RAM BEV pickup, and it appears that everything is moving smoothly in the right direction. So smoothly, in fact, that Stellantis will be ready to introduce the concept later this year. 

The company has been under pressure to produce an EV for the RAM product line since its biggest rivals are already underway in both development and sales. By the time a consumer-ready BEV pickup from RAM is released, its competitors will have had a two-year head start. 

Best BEV in the Segment?

Although the long timeline from concept to finished product may seem like a drawback, it could enable the company to use that time to add content and features that would make the RAM 1500 BEV near El Paso, NM the segment’s best. Several different reports indicate that the underpinnings of the BEV truck will be Stellantis’ Electric Drive Module #3 (EDM#3), a platform that has built-in flexibility, with the company verifying in the past that the modules can deliver between 201 and 443 hp (150 kW to 330 kW). By adding a second module, a four-wheel-drive workhorse with more than 800 hp could easily be created, and its higher capacity 800-volt system would permit it to exceed the 400-volt cap that limits EDMs 1 and 2. 

A surprising thing about the battery is that even though the DC fast-charging speed is confined to 150 kW, RAM says the battery pack will be able to replenish 20 miles per minute! The Ford F-150 Lightning has a 400-volt electrical design that can only replace 5.4 miles per minute at the same charging speed, and the GMC Hummer Edition 1, with its 800-volt construction, is stated to “be good for up to nearly 100 miles in ten minutes.” If you do the math, you see that RAM is doubling the charging speed of the Hummer and nearly quadrupling the Ford’s, which suggests an incredible battery chemistry and management combination!

The company promises a capability of up to 500 miles of range for the RAM 1500 BEV, which again easily outperforms rivals’ claims, which have ranges around the 300-mile mark.

If everything plays out the way the company intends, the CEO will be true to his word in saying, “We will have the best BEV to come to market.” We hope he’s right!
