When drivers around Southwestern New Mexico thirst for a pickup with extreme power and adaptability, there is only one place to go: Viva Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM FIAT of Las Cruces. Along with the 1500s, the RAM heavy-duty lineup continues to impress with the newest innovations and improvements for the 2023 model year. One of those enhancements is the addition of the 2023 RAM 2500 Rebel near Bayard, NM.
Big Brother to the Current Rebel
Full-size off-road enthusiasts don’t have many complaints about the extremely capable, rock-crawling RAM Power Wagon, but there is one: it’s only available with the legendary HEMI 6.4-liter V8. No matter how much its clients demand it, the company will never allow its famous Cummins turbodiesel to run the Power Wagon because the big radiators and intercoolers of the Cummins take up the space needed for the off-roader’s necessary and standard-equipped winch.
But the engineers and designers at RAM took note, so now there’s a new Heavy Duty trim added to the roster, and with it comes a recognizable name. The 2023 RAM 2500 Rebel was created to round out RAM’s off-road offerings, joining the Hellcat-powered TRX, the smaller 1500 Rebel, and the rugged Power Wagon. It slots between the PW and the more luxurious Laramie in the 2500 lineup and brings the capability of the 1500 Rebel to the big boys at a slightly more affordable price than the Power Wagon.
A few of the Rebel’s features include exclusive Rebel exterior trim and badging, 20-inch (or 18-inch) black diamond cut aluminum wheels surrounded by 33-inch all-terrain Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires, a unique “handlebar mustache” shaped grille, and a Mopar® Sport Performance hood. It also comes with trim-specific Bilstein® Monotube Shocks with a five-link rear coil suspension that provides a smooth ride on or off the trails and an electronically-controlled locking rear differential for even torque distribution and enhanced traction, like the Power Wagon.
You’ll get strong steel skid plates underneath to help protect the fuel tank and transfer case, but you won’t get any additional lift. The Rebel has the same ground clearance as the other heavy-duty models, but those big knobby tires help make it a bit higher.
Power and Performance
You can only get the 2023 RAM 2500 Rebel near Bayard, NM in a crew cab configuration with a 6-foot 4-inch bed. The standard engine is a 6.4-liter V8 with 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. The turbodiesel 6.7-liter inline-6 puts out 370 hp and a whopping 850 lb-ft of twist. You’ll get an 8-speed automatic transmission with the gasoline-powered mill and a 6-speed automatic with the Cummins.
No matter which you prefer, the HD Rebel provides more towing capability than the Power Wagon, with up to 16,870 pounds of towing capacity and 3,140 pounds of payload with the V8 and 14,920 pounds for towing and 1,970 pounds for the payload with the diesel (the heavier diesel engine takes up more gross weight towing). In comparison, the PW only rates up to 10,590 lbs of towing capacity and 1,630 lbs for payload.
Inside the 2023 RAM 2500 Rebel in Bayard, NM
The 2500 Rebel has a modest cabin at the base level- cloth upholstery, a front bench seat, and the Uconnect 5 infotainment system with an 8.4-inch touchscreen. There are three equipment groups, however, that add more luxurious options, such as a 12-inch tablet-style display, a surround-view camera system, heated seats, and power-folding tow mirrors. You can also opt to trade the cloth upholstery for either of two different types of leather seating. With some creativity and a big budget, you can outfit your new HD Rebel with the same premium finishes and features as the plush Longhorn trim.
