If you haven’t heard, Dodge has a new contender in the compact/subcompact crossover segment. The 2024 Dodge Hornet near El Paso, TX is designed to challenge rivals such as the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and the Ford Escape while boasting the attitude and straight-line performance that Dodge Muscle fans have come to expect! It vows to be one of the most powerful cars in its class and will be offered in a gasoline-powered GT model or a PHEV (plug-in hybrid) R/T version. Manufacturing of the Hornet GT is already underway in Naples, Italy, and is expected to arrive at dealerships in April 2023. It has a starting price of $31,590 (which includes a mandatory $1,595 destination fee). The R/T model is beginning production and should make its way to dealers by summertime. Its starting price adds on another $10K, at $41,590.
Power and Performance
At its core, this punchy little crossover is a modified version of the upscale 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale (Alfa Romeo being another brand of Stellantis, Dodge’s parent company). It also shares a few underpinnings with its brethren, the Jeep Renegade and Jeep Compass, and the FIAT 500X. As such, it offers two very different powertrains. The GT version runs on a traditional gasoline-only 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, mated to a smooth-shifting 9-speed automatic transmission. It belts out 268 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque and is good for 21/29/24 MPG for city/highway/combined. The only other subcompact SUV that can get you close to this amount of power is the Hyundai Kona N, which is $5,000 more than the Hornet at its starting price.
The Plug-in Hybrid Hornet R/T is Dodge’s transition to battery-electric muscle. A turbocharged 1.3-liter 4-cylinder powers it, with a pair of electric motors (one for the front axle, the other for the rear) and a 15.5-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Like the GT, all-wheel drive comes standard, but the R/T will use a 6-speed automatic transmission. This model brings a net total of 288 horsepower and a robust 383 lb-ft of torque. The R/T includes a feature called the “PowerShot,” which releases a brief boost of 30 additional horsepower, and, when used, is touted as needing only 5.6 seconds to make the 0-60 sprint! It also has three driving modes to manage the gas-electric powertrain- Electric, Hybrid, and e-Save- and switching between them only requires the press of a button. You’ll get 30 miles of all-electric power, but the other fuel-economy numbers aren’t out just yet.

You’ll also get a 10.3-inch touchscreen, the newest version of Dodge’s excellent UConnect 5 infotainment system, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with familiar Dodge graphics. Dark upholstery with contrast stitching set off the sporty look of the cabin, while the Plus package for both GT and R/T adds red to the seats, and the Track Pack brings Alcantara leather that makes the interior even more premium feeling.
The 2024 Dodge Hornet near El Paso, TX has seating for five and will fit four 6-foot-tall adults comfortably. And unlike its rivals, they’ll have plenty of head and legroom in the rear seats. Cargo volume is 27 cubic feet for the GT, with 54.7 cubes when the rear seats are folded, and 22.9 cubes for the R/T, with 50.5 cubic feet behind the first row.
