CHANGES

New paint colors and a few tweaks of current features will most likely be the extent of what's new for the 2021 edition of RAM heavy-duty (HD) pickup trucks. The Ram 2500 (and 3500 series) is made for those who need more power, towing, and payload capacity than what's available in the lighter-duty Ram 1500.

The current-generation RAM HD lineup debuted for the 2019 model year. The redesigned RAM 2500 and 3500 boasted revised styling, improved road manners, a new chassis, and advanced connectivity features. Towing and payload were improved as well, with maximum ratings of 35,100 and 7,680 pounds, respectively, when the truck is appropriately equipped. FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) also became the first of its peers, which include GM and Ford, to offer a turbodiesel engine with 1,000 lb-ft of torque.

For 2020, the second model year on the new platform, the Ram 2500 and 3500 received some small content updates along with new paint colors Olive Green and Hydro Blue. Expect a comparable level of alterations for model-year 2021.

Body-style choices for the 2021 RAM 2500 near Santa Fe NM should remain the same. Returning will be the Regular Cab with 2 doors and an 8-foot cargo bed; the Crew Cab with 4 full-size doors and choice of 6 ft 4 in, or 8-ft bed; and the exclusive Mega Cab. Mega Cabs are in essence, longer Crew Cabs with additional passenger and storage space. They exclusively use the 6-ft 4-in bed.

The carryover trim levels will start with the Tradesman and ascend to the Big Horn (called Lone Star in Texas), the Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, and the Limited. Exclusive to the 2500 will be the off-road-optimized Power Wagon, which will again fit between the Big Horn and Laramie models.

2021 RAM 2500 NEAR SANTE FE NM: POWERTRAIN

Just like the 2020 model, the 2021 Ram 2500 near Santa Fe NM also comes with a turbodiesel inline 6-cylinder or standard 6.4L HEMI V8 engine, that's capable of 410 hp and a peak torque of 429 lb-ft. The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The 6.4L HEMI V8 is the newest engine of the manufacturer that replaces the 5.7L engines in the previous models. It's smoother, quieter, and more efficient than the previous motor.

The 2021 Ram 2500 is the brawniest of all the HD trucks out there, with more power compared to rivals such as the Chevy Silverado 2500 HD Crew Cab,  Ford F-250 Crew Cab, and the GMC Sierra 2500 HD Crew Cab. Rear wheel drive is standard on all models except the Power Wagon, which comes with a part-time 4WD that's optional on the rest of the line.

The Ram 2500 is a heavy-duty truck, and just like all heavy-duty trucks on the road, it isn't rated for its fuel economy by the EPA. However, according to various consumer reports, the last-generation of the Ram 2500 accounted for a combined mpg of 14. The 2021 Ram 2500 is supposed to see about an 8% improvement on the fuel economy.

TECH

All 2021 RAM HDs should again be available with Chrysler's intuitive Uconnect software interface with support for Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto. Also available will be up to five USB Type-A and four USB Type-C power points. High-end models will offer the expansive 12-inch touchscreen display pioneered by the Ram 1500. Set in a portrait orientation, this system can be customized to show a variety of information, including Smartphone, climate, and imbedded GPS navigation.

AVAILABILITY

The next-gen HD lineup will hit the market in the last quarter of the year. That means we have to wait for a few months more until FCA starts selling the truck. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 outbreak canceled a lot of car shows and rescheduled premieres. The 2021 Ram 2500 near Santa Fe NM will debut at the first big happening in the US.
