Dodge is reviving an old nameplate and attaching it to a new compact crossover that will slot in beneath the long-running midsize Durango. The 2023 Dodge Hornet in Las Cruces NM is based on a Stellantis-company cousin, the new Alfa Romeo Tonale, and will accommodate up to five passengers.
The standard configuration is a turbocharged inline 4-cylinder producing 265-hp with all-wheel drive paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. At the same time, the R/T trim is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) that chugs out 285 hp and over 30 miles of pure electric driving.
Along with being the company’s first hybrid powertrain, the Dodge Hornet will also sport the most high-tech equipment across the lineup, with features such as a digital gauge display, automated emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, and brand-new UConnect 5 infotainment software.
The non-hybrid GT model is set to go on sale no later than the end of 2022, while the R/T PHEV model is expected to follow in early 2023.
What’s New?
Although the Hornet name originated on a Hudson vehicle many years ago, Dodge put the title on a concept vehicle in 2006 that was ultimately scrapped. The new Hornet we expect is nothing at all like that doomed model. This new Hornet competes in the compact SUV (crossover, CUV) segment with rivals including the Volkswagen Taos, Mazda CX-30, Toyota RAV4, and the Kia Seltos. The entry-level GT model will reportedly start with an MSRP of around $30,000, but no official word has been given on the hybrid Hornet.
Performance
AS stated above, the GT model of the 2023 Dodge Hornet in Las Cruces NM is powered by the turbo-four, and the all-wheel drive can be optional. The company says this powertrain will get the Hornet up to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds. Dodge’s first plug-in hybrid debuts in the R/T model, powered by a turbo 1.3-liter 4-cylinder with a 90 kWh electric motor that combined delivers 285 hp. Rather than a 9-speed transmission, the R/T has a 6-speed automatic and still comes standard with AWD.
With the brand-new PowerShot feature on the R/T model, you can temporarily add 25 hp to your power output by pulling back both paddle shifters. You can mark 60 mph in 6.1 seconds when PowerShot mode is activated.
The battery pack on the plug-in hybrid R/T is a 12.0-kWh that should get at least 30 miles of pure electric driving range per charge. Using a level 2 charger takes about two-and-a-half hours for a full charge.
2023 Dodge Hornet in Las Cruces NM: Interior
Because the Hornet is modeled after the Alfa Romeo Tonale, the interior follows suit, with the 10.25-inch infotainment screen and primary controls tilted slightly toward the driver and the tall shifter placed on the center console. You’ll get the same performance-oriented flat-bottom steering wheel as the Tonale, but with a Dodge logo in the middle. It also incorporates an ignition switch beneath the left spoke.
Black cloth upholstery with red stitching comes standard, but the GT Plus and R/T Plus trims will come with leather seating. The models with the optional Track package come with faux-suede upholstery, and an optional red leather interior is also available.
Along with the large touchscreen, all versions of the Hornet come with a highly customizable 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The infotainment interface uses Stellantis’s latest and greatest UConnect 5 system, which is very user-friendly and easy to operate.
